GVI’s community development project is based in Krong Kampong Cham, a small city about two hours from the bustling capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, and about a five hour drive from the famous Angkor Wat temple in Siem Reap. A seriously laid-back town, Kampong Cham is the perfect place to experience Cambodia’s culture and scenery without the crowds of major cities.

From our base in central Kampong Cham, volunteers can choose to teach English to Buddhist monksassist teachers with child development as well as preventative healthcare training, or work with women’s empowerment groups to increase opportunities. Those working with Buddhist monks will work in Wat Nokor Bachey, a site where ancient and modern meet. Originally an 11th century site built in honor of Lord Brahma, more modern Theravada Buddhist buildings and rooms now take over some parts of the space. Experience the magnificent beauty of Angkor Wat, without the crowds, and become fully immersed in Buddhist culture in a way non-volunteers never will.

On their time off volunteers can spend time touring the local market, where you can find lots of delicious stews served with noodles and rice, lots of fresh veggies and fruit, as well as Cambodian handicrafts like silk items. You could also go up to Phnom Pros and Phnom Srey, two neighbouring mountains that offer amazing views of the city and surrounding areas.

Centrally located, Kampong Cham is the perfect base from which to explore all that Cambodia has to offer. Phnom Penh is rather close by and you easily take a day trip to the city to see the royal palaces, or if a visit to Angkor Wat is a must for you, take a longer weekend trip to Siem Reap. You can also travel West to the coastline to experience Cambodia’s many beaches and paradise islands.
