Mexico, oh Mexico! The land of tequila, tacos and total fiesta vibes. But don’t let our stereotypes fool you, there’s so much more to this country than just partying. Whether you’re a history buff, a beach bum or just someone who loves a good plate of nachos, Mexico has something to offer. And that’s why we’ve put together this list of the top 10 cities you absolutely have to visit in Mexico. So, grab a margarita and let’s get started!

Mexico City

The heart and soul of the country. This bustling metropolis is a melting pot of history and culture. You’ve got the Templo Mayor, an ancient Aztec temple that’ll make you feel like Indiana Jones. And then there’s the Palacio de Bellas Artes, an art nouveau masterpiece that’ll make you feel like you’re in Paris. But let’s not forget about the food, folks. Mexico City’s got a vibrant street food scene that’ll make your taste buds do the salsa. And if you’re looking for a night out, the city’s got a hopping nightlife that’ll make you forget all about that 9-5 grind.

Cancun

Sure, it’s got the postcard-perfect beaches and crystal clear waters that you’ve seen on Instagram, but there’s so much more to this city than just lounging on the sand. Take a day trip to Tulum to check out some ancient Mayan ruins, or head to Chichen Itza to feel like a history nerd. And let’s not forget about the water sports. Parasailing, jet-skiing, you name it – Cancun’s got it. But if you’re looking for something a little more laid back, just grab a cold cerveza (beer) and watch the sunset over the Caribbean.

Oaxaca

This city is a feast for the senses. The colonial architecture will make you feel like you’re in a fairy tale, and the markets will make you feel like you’re in a technicolor dream. But most importantly, the food will make you feel like you’ve died and gone to heaven. Mole, tlayudas, mezcal – Oaxaca’s got it all. And the best part? The local people are more than happy to share their culinary secrets with you. Take a cooking class or join a food tour, and you’ll be whipping up traditional Oaxacan dishes in no time!

San Miguel de Allend

San Miguel de Allende, what can we say? This city will steal your heart. The charming colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and vibrant art scene will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. But, wait! It’s not just about looks. San Miguel de Allende has some of the most relaxing and rejuvenating hot springs and spa treatments. After a day of exploring the city, you can soak in the hot springs and forget all your troubles.

Guadalajara

The birthplace of tequila and mariachi music. This is a city that will make you want to let loose and have a good time. The city’s rich history, culture, and vibrant art scene will keep you entertained for days. But, let’s be real, the real star of the show is the tequila. Take a tour of one of the many tequila distilleries and you’ll never look at tequila the same way again. And the traditional regional cuisine? Trust us, it’s worth the extra few pounds.

Tulum

Tulum, the city of ancient ruins and yoga pants. The ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum are a sight to behold. But Tulum is not just about history, this city is also about living in the present. There are plenty of eco-friendly and wellness-focused accommodations and activities, such as yoga and meditation classes. So, whether you’re looking to connect with the past or find inner peace, Tulum’s got you covered.

Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is a beach lover’s paradise. Beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and diverse water sports and activities will keep you entertained all day. But Playa del Carmen is not just about the beaches, there’s also a variety of activities to enjoy. The city is home to the famous 5th Avenue, a pedestrian street lined with shops, restaurants, and bars, making it a great place to spend an afternoon or evening.

The city also offers a variety of outdoor activities, such as snorkelling or diving in the world-renowned coral reefs of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef – which you can learn to dive with GVI, or taking a day trip to the nearby cenotes for a refreshing swim in the natural sinkholes.

Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a city that truly has it all. The charming old town, also known as El Centro, is a maze of cobblestone streets and brightly coloured colonial-style buildings. Take a stroll down the famous Malecon, a seaside promenade that stretches for miles, and you’ll be treated to stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, as well as a variety of street performers and vendors.

One of the city’s main attractions is its beautiful beaches, such as Playa de los Muertos and Playa Conchas Chinas. The beaches are perfect for lounging on the sand, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and enjoying a variety of water sports, such as paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkelling. And if you’re feeling adventurous, take a boat tour to see the famous Los Arcos, a group of natural rock formations located just off the coast.

And when it comes to food, Puerto Vallarta is a paradise for seafood lovers, with a variety of seafood restaurants serving up fresh catches of the day.
