The centre that you will intern in was established by a group of parents wanting to provide high quality therapy to people with disabilities with a view to teach them how to be more independent and productive citizens.
This is done through a process of knowing each child’s needs and providing an adequate therapy, providing formal education following the regular school curriculum, and motivating the integration of artistic and recreational activities as well as training the parents on how to give the therapies.
You will be assisting the centre staff in Playa del Carmen on the different activities they do, from preparing class resources to organising games, and if you are staying for longer, complementary therapies to people with disabilities, focusing on the most vulnerable social groups.
The aim of this centre is to contribute to the integral development and ease their incorporation to normal day to day activities. You will play a key role in this as the centre is run with very few staff.
How this project makes a difference
In Mexico, 5.1% of the population suffer some type of disability and are often discriminated in schools and work placements. They require special attention and therapy in order to interact more comfortably with other people. This can be very expensive in private schools or clinics, and governmental authorities lack sufficient resources to provide adequate and long-term treatment to this sector of the population. Together with The Integral Care Centre, GVI provides these communities with the necessary assistance and resources.
*During holiday periods participants may do alternative activities such as lesson planning, preparing teaching resources, preparing workshops, creating training materials, assisting with holiday programs and/or assisting with the vet project.
Playa del Carmen's short, mid, and long-term objectives
All of our programs have short, mid and long-term objectives that fit with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This enables us to report on our collaborative impact across the world in a streamlined manner, measuring which UN SDGs we are making a substantial contribution to. Furthermore, this will help our local partners and communities measure and visualize their contribution to the UN SDGs.
Upon arrival to base, you will be educated about the history of the UN SDGs. You will learn about the specific goals of your location, the long-, mid- and short-term objectives, and also clarification of how your personal, shorter-term involvement contributes to these goals on a global level.
Our aim is to educate you on local and global issues, so that you continue to act as active global citizens after your program, helping to fulfil our mission of building a global network of people united by their passion to make a difference.
